My husband and I just got married on July 23, 2011, so we decided to celebrate our big day by going to Alan Wong's to treat ourselves to a fancy dinner. Both of us had never been to the restaurant before and had heard great things about it, so we were looking forward to going.
Logistics:The restaurant is located on 1857 South King Street, which is on the same street as many other restaurants, and if you blink, you'd probably miss the building where the restaurant is. It's on the third floor of a building that looks like it'd hold offices, and not a fine-dining restaurant.
Ambiance: I always thought Alan Wong's was a fancy restaurant, so I made my husband wear dress slacks. Most people were wearing aloha shirts, slacks, or nice semi-formal clothing. I didn't see anyone in a suit or cocktail dress. There were actually some people wearing t-shirts and shorts! The open kitchen would be cool to watch, especially if you're seated nearby. We were seated near the glass pane looking out on to the street. I actually thought the glass wasn't there and it was open, but on closer inspection, I noticed it was enclosed.
Food $: Appetizers ran from $8-$20, which included a variety of options. Entrees went up to about $40. They also offer pre-fixed menus (1 for $75, which included five courses and the other for over $100, which included 8 or 9 courses).
What we ordered:
We were given complimentary garlic rolls with a chili aoili sauce. I thought the roll tasted great with the sauce, which gave it a little kick.
Poki Pines
We started off our meal with this appetizer. I thought they were pretty cute! The exterior was made up of fried won ton wrapper cut into strips, and as you ate through the fried goodness, there were little patties made of poke. The pieces of avocado were a nice touch as well.
H.R. Caesar Salad with Crispy Cheese Basket
We decided to get a salad to share as well, so we decided to stick to something that was familiar to us. When I read anchovy dressing, I was a little hesitant to get it, but we figured we should be adventurous. This salad was excellent! I loved how the salad was presented and how it tasted! The dressing wasn't bad at all and went really well with the combination of Romaine lettuce, kalua pork, and relish on the salad itself. I enjoyed the cheese basket that held it all together and sopped it in the dressing before eating it.
Seafood Duo
I ordered this as my entree. As you can see, the main parts of the dish included some spears of asparagus, a huge piece of lobster, and a lasagna type section. There were bits of different types of seafood in the lasagna "cup." Once I took a bite of the asparagus, I was totally hooked on the dish.
Pacific Long-Tail Red Snapper
This was my husband's entree. The waiter mentioned that this was one of the more popular dishes that the restaurant served. My husband said that the fish melted in his mouth and that he loved the taste of the sauce. He finished all of the fish, but left most of the garnish on his plate.
The Coconut
I had heard about this dessert and was really looking forward to it since I LOVE coconut! There were different kinds of fruit, including kiwi, pineapple, starfruit, and mango along with the coconut sorbet inside of the chocolate shell shaped like the exterior of a coconut. I got to eat most of this myself because my husband doesn't care for coconuts. :)
Complimentary Dessert
Unfortunately I can't remember what this dessert was, but there was a bit of coconut sorbet on the plate, which I finished off. We only got through half of the cake. :(
Concluding Thoughts:
I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to experience food ecstasy. I thought everything tasted excellent! We will definitely be back again to celebrate a special event.
